When Calls the Heart is a DVD series that is based off the books written by Janette Oke. This series is based in a 19th century, small coal mining town where lead character Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) begins her journey as the town’s new school teacher. Having come from wealth and a more civilized town, Elizabeth has all types of hurdles in assimilating herself in this small town. What she soon discovers is that this town has its own hurdles and is suffering from the loss of several of its men due to a terrible mining accident. This four DVD set will unravel your heart through love, hurt, struggle and victory.
When Calls the Heart: Lost and Found is the second DVD in this series. In this DVD not only does Elizabeth experience difficulties, but so does Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin) and the other widows who were facing the chance of losing their homes to the mining company. Their homes were technically property of the mining company and since they no longer had family working for them, the widows were forced to work the mines themselves to keep their homes.
The third DVD in this series, When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence, is a dramatic installment where Elizabeth is concerned for an 8 year old student who has become mute after the traumatic loss of her father in the town’s coal mining accident. This young girl goes missing and suspicion of Cat Montgomery arrises after Jack Thornton, the town’s constable, discovers cans of whale oil at her home, which was the same rare oil discovered at the scene of the burnt down church. In When Calls the Heart, true feelings of some of the characters come out as well as several pieces to the events of the preceding DVD’s, which reveal that there is more to the events than what was first thought.
When Calls the Heart: The Dance is the fourth installment of this DVD series. New miners arrive in town giving hope to some and grief to others. One of the miners, Billy Hamilton, takes a special interest in Elizabeth, which irritates Jack Thornton. His jealousy raises his curiosity on whether or not Billy really is who he says he is. Ignorant to any of this, Elizabeth gladly receives Billy’s interest in her and accompanies him to the town dance. It is at the time of the dance that Jack finds out that his suspicions were correct- Billy really wasn’t who he said he was.
When Calls the Heart DVD Series clearly includes stories of struggle and hardship, but these stories in addition to others are also full of examples of faith, friendship and community. When Calls the Heart DVD Series is a light hearted series that teaches good, honest lessons and is entertaining to watch together with the entire family.
