Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) is the world’s largest faith-based pro-marriage movement. Every year, they celebrate the couple in the United States who have been married for the longest period of time. This year’s winners are Harold and Edna Owings in Burbank, CA. They were married on November 24, 1931, making theirs a marriage that has lasted over 82 years!

What creates a marriage as strong as Harold and Edna’s? I won’t pretend to know. And perhaps that’s the problem, isn’t it? Pretending? The majority of couples saying “I do” these days ride into marriage on the coat tails of their imagination. Certainly, dreaming of a great marriage and refusing to settle is a legitimate desire; especially among Christians. But a lot more goes into marriage certificates that last long enough to send some kids off to college. Maybe, when it comes to something as important as the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with (or how you’ll continue with that person you already picked), we could admit that we need some help. Lucky for us, there are several Christian materials and resources that work to help us get to Harold and Edna status.

How Will We Love: Dr. Gary Chapman teams up with Ed and Lisa Young to address the question we all need an answer to: “How Will We Love?” Dr. Chapman wrote The 5 Love Languages, one of the most helpful looks inside what truly loving someone will look like on a day-to-day basis.

Marriage Retreat: A group of couples come together for a time of growing in love and what it takes for marriage to actually work.

Fireproof: So you got married. You honey-mooned. And suddenly, you run face-first into all those problems you thought went away when you said, “I do.” Fireproof is a well-told story that will encourage you.
