Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s “Son of God” will be the first feature film about the life of Jesus Christ out in theaters since Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” came out 10 years ago. It comes as no shock that people are interested in seeing Jesus. It’s been this way since before he ever showed up and long after he left the earth in human form. For some reason, no one, regardless of their religious affiliation, has been able to forget the name of Jesus. Throughout the years, this universal obsession with the identity of the Son of God has sparked several different forms of creative expression.

The art of film-making has been no stranger to this truth either. Films about the life of Jesus tell the story of the centerpiece of the Gospel while also demonstrating varying contexts dependent on the time period in which they were made. Much like when each human being accepts Christ, Jesus’ role in each film varies without ever compromising the truth of who Jesus is (except for those random ones where Jesus looks like a perfectly groomed Swedish underwear model).

So before you line up and buy your tickets for 20th Century Fox’s “Son of God” (which I’m hoping you do. And hey! Why not buy the DVD as well? Perhaps at Agreed), check out the life of Jesus brought to life again and again in these fantastic Jesus films.
