If you love Christmas like me then you must love Christmas movies. I frankly can’t get enough of them and throughout the year I can’t wait for Christmastime to arrive so Christmas movies can be 24/7 on my television.
I watched A December Bride last year when it aired for the first time on the Hallmark Channel and enjoyed its storyline and characters greatly. It’s based on the book by the same name written by Denise Hunter. This Christmas movie is about Layla, an interior designer, who is absolutely dreading the Christmas season since her cousin is marrying her ex-fiancée. Even though Seth is the one who set up the bride and groom, she accepts his offer to be his date to the wedding and there he announces they’re engaged. Now she has to keep up with the lie.
A December Bride begins with a sort of flashback that presents Seth, Layla’s friend, (played by When Calls the Heart’s Daniel Lissing) introducing Layla’s fiancée at the time, Jack, to Layla’s cousin Jessica. The only reason why Seth introduces them both is to help Jessica and her business since Jack is a financial stockholder. The both of them hit it off so well that Layla (played by Jessica Lowndes) and Jack’s relationship went up in smoke as Jack left Layla at the altar. Her dream of becoming a December bride was now crushed and she had lost hope that it would happen. Fast forward to present time, Jack was about to marry Jessica.
Since Layla and Jessica are cousins, she is invited to the wedding and even though she doesn’t want to attend, Layla feels that she has to since Jessica is family. Even her aunt Lorraine is telling her that it is the right thing to do. Now she had to find a date. She asks her neighbor Cooper but since he can’t go with her, she ends up going with her friend Seth. He felt bad about how everything had turned out so this was a way to make it up to her. In the feel of the moment, Seth announces at the wedding that him and Layla are engaged. This announcement certainly causes mixed feelings to the respective families as some of them are really happy about it and some of them are greatly worried.
Layla has always been very hardworking and always has the desire to do a good job at everything she did. She worked for somebody now but she felt like it was time to take a chance and create her own business. One where she could do what she loved to do, which was to be an interior decorator for different spaces like apartments or houses that were on list to sell. Now her next move was to locate someone who needed an interior decorator, who would take a chance and hire her.
Apart from their arrangement, Seth hires Layla to help decorate his home in time for the “Holiday Tour of Homes” which is a community program organized by Mrs. Hardwick, his boss’s wife and he didn’t want to put his job in jeopardy in any way if he didn’t have it decorated in time.
As Seth and Layla continue their “fake” engagement, they start to get to know each other even more, and discover that maybe love was right there in front of them. When the lie was too much for them, they decide to do a quick public break up but when the time to “break up” was upon them, Seth really didn’t want to. Layla eventually achieved her dream of being A December Bride.
This Christmas movie is very charming and heart warming. If you love Daniel Lissing’s portrayal in the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart, you’ll definitely enjoy watching him on this modern day role.
